One of the most sought-after locations for a Lake Como photoshoot, Villa del Balbianello__ only opens professional photography reservations three months in advance. The most desirable morning and golden hour time slots are often reserved within days, particularly between April and October.
What surprises many couples is that buying a regular visitor ticket does not give you permission to have a professional photoshoot inside the villa. Professional photography requires a separate reservation and photography fee, which must be arranged directly with the villa in advance.

While travelling by ferry or boat is part of the Lake Como experience, public transport can be unpredictable during peak summer. Long queues, delays and heavy traffic can easily eat into your schedule, leaving you feeling rushed before your session even begins.
By staying nearby, you’ll enjoy a slower, more relaxed start to the day, with plenty of time to get ready and soak in the experience. From my experience photographing couples in Lake Como, the best sessions happen when there’s no need to rush from one place to another.
Don't Overlook Your Vintage Boat Experience
A classic wooden boat has become one of the most iconic parts of any Lake Como engagement photoshoot.
Besides showcasing the beauty of the lake itself, it creates chic, timeless photographs that simply can’t be recreated on land.
However, there’s one detail many couples easily overlook.
When choosing your outfits, think about how they’ll look not only while standing but also while seated. Some fabrics fold beautifully, while others bunch or lose their shape. Tailored outfits, flowing dresses and timeless silhouettes usually photograph wonderfully from every angle.
Comfort is just as important as style. The more comfortable you feel, the more naturally you’ll interact with one another.
Plan Your Timeline Around the Best Light
One of the biggest factors that influences your photographs is the time of day. During the summer months, midday light can be harsh and popular locations become much busier, afternoon seems to be a lovely time for traveling, but not really for shooting as towns get busier. Whenever possible, I recommend planning your shoot earlier in the morning or the hours leading up to sunset, when the light is softer, temperatures are cooler, and the atmosphere feels much more peaceful.
It’s also worth allowing more time in your schedule than you think you’ll need. Although Lake Como looks compact on a map, travelling between villages, boarding ferries or boats, and simply walking through historic streets often takes longer than expected. A relaxed timeline gives you the freedom to enjoy the experience without constantly watching the clock— and those unhurried moments often become some of the most genuine photographs from the day.
